Parks Appreciation Day
If your happy place is on or near freshwater, Lakewood is calling your name. There’s a reason this area was called the Lakes District in pioneer times. There are several ways to experience Lakewood’s lakes.
Bring your own boat+
With public access points and miles of water, why not enjoy Mount Rainier views while zipping (or paddling) along on the majestic waters of Lake Steilacoom or American Lake WA? Your next waterskiing or wakeboarding vacation doesn’t have to take you hours away to a moldy overpriced rental cabin. Why not grab a nice room or two in one of Lakewood’s recently built hotels and hit the lake with a continental breakfast in your belly?
Boat or Jet Ski Rental+
Jet skis and small boats can be rented from various local companies. Local fishing outfitter, Bill’s Boathouse, rents aluminum fishing boats and pontoon boats. Jet skis can also be rented and towed to several of our lake’s from various outfitters around the Puget Sound.
Lakeside Parks and Play+
Our parks are free and open. Enjoy our swimming holes, play areas, picnic shelters, and more at:
- American Lake Park
- Harry Todd Park
- Ft. Steilacoom Park
Lakewood’s Seven Lakes +
- American Lake – The largest natural lake in Pierce County. Home to 3 public-access parks, a private Country Club, and an imported Tudor castle. It’s a watersports destination, perfect for fishing, water skiing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing.
- Lake Steilacoom – A smaller lake with a shallower depth, Lake Steilacoom offers jet skiing, water skiing, and wakeboarding with warmer water conditions. The lake also draws fishermen angling for their share of the water’s bass and rainbow trout.
- Gravelly Lake – A gorgeous private ground-fed lake surrounded by luxury homes. Lakewold Gardens is a fabulous way to experience the lake’s tranquility amidst the grandeur of a garden estate.
- Lake Louise – A smaller kettle lake surrounded by private residences, Lake Louise has public access and crystal-clear fishing waters.
- Waughop Lake – Located on the sprawling grounds of Fort Steilacoom Park — worth a lengthy visit even without the lake — Waughop is a favorite place for walkers and runners to stretch their legs. Its waters are not suitable for swimming, but they’re great for remote-controlled water vessels.
- Seeley Lake – A small lake and wetland tucked into stands of oaks, Seeley Lake, with its looping trail, beckons lazy strollers and serious joggers alike.
